Sak Yant Chiang Mai is a Tour Company that specializes in the unique and exclusive Thai cultural traditions of the Magical Sak Yant. The Sak Yant which first gain international notoriety when Angelina Jolie received her first (and later her 2nd, 3rd, 4th) Sak Yant Tattoo.

We are the only Tour company in Thailand that has a selection of over 5 different Monks and 5 different Ajarns who are able to perform the Sak Yant ritual on both Men and Women. The Sak Yant has become so popular with Tourists that we have grown in just a year from, a private tour with a few customers a week - to a fully fledged Tour Company providing an average of 40-45 Sak Yant Experiences each week.  So popular, that Monks and Ajarns offered to perform the Sak Yant ritual from our shop location in Chiang Mai's Old City.

Our Beginnings

Sak Yant Chiang Mai was started early in 2016, from humble beginnings. Originally the business was known as Chiang Mai Locals, and provided a range of Expats services.  Over the first few months of operating, one service; The Sak Yant Experience started to gain international momentum and over time the focus moved towards focusing on providing this popular tour.

Within months of starting as a private tour guide offering Sak Yant Tours to interested tourists, Nana started to gain an international reputation. First was the Travel Blogger Amy Truong who was the first person to ask Nana about getting a Sak Yant and wrote about it in her travel blog "Getting a Sak Yant by a Monk in Chiang Mai" Later many other travel bloggers from all over the world wrote about their Sak Yant experience with guide Nana, in a variety of different languages.

In the first 3 Months of starting,  Nana helped almost 100 foreigners obtain an authentic Magical Sak Yant Tattoo.  After 6 months of operating, the business name was changed from Chiang Mai Locals, to Sak Yant Chiang Mai as this was clearly the direction her small business was going.

Nana spent the next 9 months, learning how to run an online business, going to English classes and establishing connections with many more Monks and Ajarns.  During this time her Sak Yant Tours, and a growing reputation from travel blogs and referrals from local hostels and hotels, Nana thought about opening a small shop.  Initially the idea for the shop was to provide a venue where people could come in and make inquiries while she was out on tours; (The tours are small and intimate and Nana wanted to give 100% attention to her guests and this was difficult with 60 plus emails and texts each day asking about the Sak Yant).

To her surprise some of the Monks and Ajarns she took guests to visit also offered to help, and suggested they come into the Shop a few days a week to provide Sak Yants.  Nana had to think about this.  She had come from a rural background, with little formal education, and just spent 9 months working and studying 12 hours a day and for the first time in her life had money in a savings account.   She took the risk, and spent her entire life savings to rent, renovate and outfit a small shop with it's own Sannak (Scared Sak Yant Room) opening on November 10th 2016.

Now Sak Yant Chiang Mai is able to offer both the 3 hour tour to a Temple or Ajarn, and for those with a limited budget or time, an in-house Sak Yant Tattoo from visiting Monks and Ajarns.  The Shop is small and reflects Nana's personality of being humble and authentic (not a western style polished mass tourist attraction or concierge service).  Sak Yant Chiang Mai has employed a office manager and tour guide (Johny) who along with Nana, do their best to make each guest as comfortable as possible, ensuring the Thai culture and traditions of showing respect to Monks and Ajarns are maintained.

We are proud, to provide small and imitate Sak Yant experiences for our guests, and are 100% committed to maintaining providing the genuine experience over a polished mass tour experience.   We hope to see you soon 🙂
